One of the first alternative formations ever invented by two separate fans simultaneously, The Backup Tool is played when you need more clarity regarding the original row pulled.

How To Play

  1. Play this formation alone or with a group.

  2. Separate The Deck of Character into its three main categories.

  3. Ask a question. This formation can be paired with any question. For question ideas, visit Questions.

  4. Shuffle each pile independently.

  5. Pull one card at random from each category, forming a Basic Row.

  6. Flip the cards over.

  7. Interpret. If playing in a group setting, the person who asked the question typically speaks first. While The DOC is more about improvising and honoring your genuine reaction to the cards, you can read about each card in more depth via Cards.

  8. Pull one more Tool card to add insight into the original Basic Row.

  9. Reinterpret the extended formation, with the additional insight of the Backup Tool card taken into consideration.

  10. If playing in a group, pass the deck to the next player.
